History and Policy Workshop: Delhi

December 14 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

History and Policy Workshop: Delhi

In an era of recurring challenges to ‘facts’ and of public debate marked by increasing rancour, polarisation and lack of civility, it is more important than ever that historical work provides publicly-accessible anchor points upon which more civil and informed public policy debated can draw. The range of activities that historians might undertake is broad and there are examples of history and policy in action, especially in:

  • The History and Policy group in the UK (policy papers, longer articles, training early career historians for policy impact, history of government blog);
  • The US National History Center (Congressional Briefings, seminar series, training for history students to write for policy impact);
  • And the Australian Policy and History network (opinion papers, profiles of former politicians, longer form articles for journalists, podcasts, policy briefings, and an annual ‘History on the Hill’ event).

Given the aggression attaching to some debates over history in India, and given the shared need for policy debated to draw on the best possible resources, is it time for some form of Indian organisation/network/regular events fostering similar activities to those of the UK, UK and Australian bodies? A roundtable-form workshop, attended by members of the Australian Policy and History network in conversation with Indian scholars an policy analysts will pursue this question with a view to exploring what might be possible and logical.
