A new major research project from Australian Policy and History!

Every year, Australian governments spend millions of dollars on consultancy firms to produce reports on the major problems and challenges of our society. Each report claims to offer historical context of the issue and pose novel solutions – without ever consulting a historian. What do we get from the way they package Australia’s key policy issues? What crucial pieces do they leave out?

This new initiative from APH examines the potted policy histories of the Big 4 consultancy firms. Led by Dr Nathan Gardner Molina, we are identifying common themes across the Big 4 and key gaps in their ‘knowledge creation’. In the months to come, we will recruit leading and emerging historians to take on specific portfolios to disrupt this sector; digging into what the Big 4 churn out, breaking out of the traditional frameworks they keep thinking in, and using knowledge of policy history – what’s worked and what hasn’t – to meet our major challenges.
